Open Education at The Open University

What is supported open learning? How do you teach and support 250,000 students
online at a distance? What is it like to work with the BBC? When is it necessary
to make educational content more accessible? How can you get 40 million
downloads from iTunesU? Why did we create OpenLearn? What makes a successful
collaborative international initiative? How do we know if people like what we do?

The Open University has more than 40 years history of using new visual and digital
technologies to supplement and enhance more traditional media such as print to
create effective learning experiences through open and distance learning.

This one day event is being held at The Open University’s Milton Keynes campus
on the 19th April 2012 immediately after Cambridge 2012 and is free to attend for
Cambridge 2012 participants. The day provides an insight into six aspects of The
Open University’s work and the impact that work is having on open education:

  1. Creating educational materials
  2. Teaching and supporting students
  3. Engaging with informal learners
  4. Researching students and learners
  5. Developing innovative technologies

The programme will begin at 9.30 am and end 16.00 pm and involves a number of participative presentations and demonstrations of what we do, how we do it and why it is important to open education. It also offers a chance to hear Martin Bean, The Open University’s Vice Chancellor, talk about the mission and strategic ambitions of the University in this increasingly open and digital world.

While there is no charge for attendance and lunch and other refreshments are provided during the event, attendees will have to make and pay for their own travel and accommodation arrangements. The most direct travel is to take the X5 coach that runs between Cambridge and Oxford via Milton Keynes. An alternative is to take the train and go via London. There are a number of hotels in Milton Keynes.
